Hydronic Wood Furnaces – An Environmentally Conscious Choice

Rising fuel and energy costs worldwide have people looking for alternatives in an effort to reduce their energy bills. Many are looking into the benefits of hydronic wood furnaces as an alternative energy and heating source. Hydronic wood furnaces burn wood, a renewable resource, to heat water used in a forced air, or hydronic – “water” radiant heat system.
The term “hydronic” is used to describe a heating or cooling system, which circulates fluid through a closed system of pipes. The wood fired boiler itself is located outside. Because this type of wood fired boiler heats water which is then used to heat your home, it is generally known as a wood fired hydronic furnace and can be used in conjunction with an existing forced air heating system.
Having your furnace located outside may seem a bit unusual, but in the case of a hydronic wood furnace, it eliminates a host of other potential problems such as how to vent smoke and carbon monoxide generated in the burning process. It also eliminates any possibility of explosions if you are also using a gas heating system.
Homes remain cleaner and healthier as the smoke, ashes, bark and soot associated with indoor fireplaces and other wood burning units is eliminated. Of course it doesn’t hurt that you are then also able to keep the wood supply close to where the boiler has been installed. With the wood supply also located fully out of doors, you eliminate the mess and bugs common to indoor wood storage.
Allergy sufferers may benefit from having the furnace located out of doors. Many respiratory and allergy problems have been associated with burning wood, oil and gas indoors.
Depending on your location, your heating bill could experience a drastic reduction. Wood as a fuel source is generally inexpensive and in some areas it may even be available for free. As an outdoor furnace of this type is capable of using larger pieces of wood, the cost of purchasing wood supplies is also typically lower (up to $60 per cord less). Temperature is regulated using thermostats, giving you a reliable, steady source of heat.
Because a hydronic wood furnace can be used to heat water in addition to heating your home, this cost is also reduced. At least you would not have to worry about running out of hot water.
This type of furnace may not be the best choice for everyone as an alternative energy and heating source. They do require more hands on upkeep than a conventional furnace as any wood burning unit would. The availability of an inexpensive source for wood and storage requirements come into play. As well, you will want to check if there are any regulations in your area prohibiting their use before purchasing.
Overall, hydronic wood furnaces provide an alternative to the rising cost of heating from conventional, non-renewable energy sources.

Types Of Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

Fuel-efficient vehicles are no longer a dream in the future, they are a reality today. Environmentally conscious consumers are using their dollars to demand more options from manufacturers and they are getting them.
But, are you aware of the options available when it comes to choosing between the types of fuel-efficient vehicles? There are certainly a number of types and models to choose from and basically they fall into two categories, those with two wheels and those with four wheels.
Under the category of those with two wheels you will find motorcycles, mopeds, and scooters. These are fossil fuel burning vehicles. In addition, you also have the choice of electric powered vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, scooters, and bicycles.
Be aware of the needs you are trying to meet when making your choice. Although they have many similarities, there are differences significant enough to restrict their uses under certain circumstances. For example, a motorcycle is capable of achieving much higher speeds than a moped and as such, it has access to higher speed roadways, but also may have higher licensing requirements and insurance costs.
The slower speed units such as mopeds, scooters and bicycles are generally restricted to the lower speed limits in town. There may be limits placed on where these units can be driven. Most would not be welcome on sidewalks or bike paths. Checking for specific laws and regulations that govern their use in your area will assist you in making an informed purchase choice.
Under the category of four wheeled fuel-efficient vehicles we find hybrids, electric, bio-diesel, and fuel-efficient gas powered vehicles. Many people are still pretty leery when it comes to vehicles that operate on fuel other than gasoline. They worry about running out of fuel before they reach their destination and the lack of refueling depots for long journeys. As these vehicles become more common and research is used to improve their usability, these concerns will be overcome.
As with their two wheeled counterparts, four wheeled fuel-efficient vehicles come in many different makes and models, with a variety of features. As problems are resolved and their usability is increased, more choices will be made available by manufacturers working to meet consumer demands.
