Most people who use home heating oil to heat their homes will not ever have any problems with their system. There is not much maintenance involved in a heating oil system apart from a regular check to make sure it is running ok. But unfortunately for some people, sometimes problems do happen with a heating oil system. And of the problems which could occur with an oil system, a leak is probably the most common. An oil leak can cause big problems so it is important that you know what to look for and deal with the situation straight away.

How To Recognize The Signs Of An Oil Leak

Do not think that it is a crisis situation if you experience an oil leak in your system. You usually don’t see a big gusher like in the movies when they tap an oil well. Most people first notice that they have an oil leak because their consumption of oil increases significantly even though their heating requirements have not changed at all. If you find that your heating requirements have not changed, but your consumption has increased, then there are usually two possible reasons. Either somebody is stealing it or you have a leak.

You might also be alerted to the possibility of a leak if you find oil somewhere around your tank or elsewhere in your system. Oil is supplied to your boiler by a pipe and a leak could occur anywhere along this route. It is possible for a leak to go unnoticed for sometime, especially if your pipes are hidden.

You will have to contact your supplier immediately if you spot a leak anywhere as it is never a good thing to have oil leaking from your system. Oil is generally safe but it can do a lot of harm to the environment. And, if the spill is anywhere near to running water, it can be much worse. You may have to call in the help of the professionals if the spill is quite large.

Heating your home in the cold months of winter can cost a fair packet. Electricity and gas prices are very high and show no signs of coming down any time soon. Clever people are switching to heating oil as a fuel though. Heating oil suppliers make sure the nations oil tanks stay full. Heating oil suppliers are found countrywide and can, as an example, supply heating oil Uckfield.
