Renewable Energy Is Our Only Alternative

The utility bills have arrived once again and once again their rising cost is hard to swallow. But as long as we remain tied to fossil fuels as a source of heat and energy, those bills will continue to climb because the source of these fuels are depleted. One day we may have no choice in whether we switch to alternative energy sources, but for now, the choice is still ours to make.
It is estimated by some that the supply of oil may run out in as little as 30 years from now, while natural gas may be depleted over the next 50 years. For some of us, that will not be in our lifetime, but what about the lifetime of our children and grandchildren? The urgency to find renewable alternative energy is increasing right along with the need to reduce pollutants that are being released into our environment. We have the mechanisms available to make use of other sources.
What is renewable energy?
Renewable energy is energy that is taken from a source that renews itself, does not deplete natural resources and is not harmful to the environment. Two widely popular types of renewable energy are wind power and solar power. On a larger scale, we have geothermal energy, and hydropower, as well as wave and tidal power. Alternatives to the use of fossil fuels include biofuels such as wood and corn pellets, biodiesel, and nuclear energy. Nuclear energy in particular is frowned upon by many due to its potential to create enormous damage to the environment.
What is the difference between renewable and alternative energy?
Many of us believe that renewable and alternative energy is one and the same thing. In actuality, they are not. Renewable energy comes from “clean” sources that are friendly to our environment and that are provided by natural means. These sources include wind, solar, geothermal and hydro based energy sources. Alternative energy refers to alternatives to fossil fuels. Alternatives to fossil fuels include biomass fuels such as wood and grain, as well as the collection of methane from landfills. They also include nuclear power. These alternatives, while some are friendlier than others, are not considered to be “clean” resources.
Why are we dependent on fossil fuels?
I may be wrong, but I believe our dependency on fossil fuels began when we transitioned from horse and buggy to the motorized vehicle. While it is true that ocean travel used coal for fuel (the Titanic used 825 tons of coal per day), as did trains, the general use of fossil fuel by mankind began when transportation was modernized by the motorized vehicle. Around these vehicles, the entire infrastructure of our land has been built.
Even though many alternatives to the use of fossil fuels have been around for decades, mankind is a creature of habit and comfort seeking. We are willing to change when things are made easier and many see the change to alternative renewable energy as anything but easy. Energy from renewable sources is not as readily stored and transported as is oil and gas and in many cases technology, such as the electric car, has been restricted in its usage by the range it is able to cover.
Entrepreneurs and governments are slowly addressing many of these issues. Need has always been the drive behind invention and the need for a means to recharge electrical vehicles may someday lead to our having a choice at the local station of refueling or recharging.
Governments are investing in research as well and making incentives available in the form of grants and rebates to those that take action and invest in renewable energy sources. As the call for cheaper and better renewable alternatives grows louder and people vote for these choices with their dollars, business will increasingly move towards addressing these needs.
